เมื่อวันที่ 2 ธันวาคม 2561 สถานเอกอัครราชทูต ณ กรุงไนโรบี ได้นำคณะนักดนตรีวงตำไม้ ซึ่งนำโดยอาจารย์อานันท์ นาคคง เยี่ยมวง Ghetto Classics ในชุมชน Korogocho กรุงไนโรบี ระหว่างการเยี่ยมชม คณะนักดนตรีจากไทยได้จัดการแสดงและสาธิตดนตรีแก่ครูและนักเรียนดนตรีของชุมชนดังกล่าว

          วงตำไม้เป็นรวมตัวของอาจารย์ดนตรีจากสถาบันต่างๆ ได้แก่ อาจารย์อานันท์ นาคคง จากคณะดุริยางคศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร อาจารย์รังสรรค์ บัวทอง และอาจารย์อัมรินทร์ แรงเพ็ชร จากมหาวิทยาลัยราชภัฏบ้านสมเด็จเจ้าพระยา และอาจารย์เกรียงไกร วรีวัฒน์ จากโรงเรียนวัดช่างเหล็ก กรุงเทพฯ

คณะนักดนตรีจากไทยได้แสดงดนตรีทั้งแนวไทยเดิมและแนวอีสาน รวมทั้งให้ความรู้และแลกเปลี่ยนเทคนิควิธีการเล่นดนตรีไทยประเภทต่าง ๆ อาทิ ซอด้วง ซออู้ แคน พิณ และโปงลาง ให้กับนักดนตรีฝึกหัดของวงดนตรี Ghetto Classics หลังจากนั้น นักดนตรีวงดนตรีตำไม้และวง Ghetto Classics ได้เล่นเพลง “นกไซบินข้ามทุ่ง” ในลักษณะโปงลางคอนแชร์โต ร่วมกันด้วย

          อนึ่ง Ghetto Classics ตั้งอยู่บริเวณชุมชน Korogocho ซึ่งเป็นชุมชนแออัดที่ใหญ่ที่สุดแห่งหนึ่งของกรุงไนโรบี โดยโครงการดังกล่าวก่อตั้งมาตั้งแต่ปี 2551 บนแนวคิดว่า การเรียนและฝึกซ้อมดนตรีสากลจะช่วยฝึกความมีวินัย ความมุ่งมั่น และการทำงานเป็นทีมเพื่อให้บรรลุเป้าหมายร่วมกัน ซึ่งจะเป็นทักษะชีวิตที่สำคัญที่จะช่วยเปลี่ยนแปลงชีวิตของเด็กและเยาวชน และสร้างชุมชนที่เข้มแข็งได้ ปัจจุบัน วง Ghetto Classics มีสมาชิกประมาณ 300 คน

          On 2 December 2018, a group of four-membered Tam Mai music band visited community musical ensemble, Ghetto Classics, in Korogocho community in Nairobi. During the visit, organised by the Royal Thai Embassy in Nairobi, the musicians led by music scholar Anant Narkkong, gave a performance and also held a workshop for instructors and young members of the community ensemble.

Tam Mai Band, is a gathering of Thai music scholars from various institutes. Mr. Anant Narkkong, Faculty of Music, Silpakorn University; Mr. Rangsan Buathong, Office of Art and Culture and Mr. Ammarin Rangpeth, College of Music, Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University; and Mr. Kriangkrai Wareewat, Wat Chang Lek School, Bangkok.

          The Thai music professors performed different pieces of Thai traditional and northeastern Thai folk music. They also taught and exchanged techniques in performing various musical instruments such as Saw Duang (high-pitched fiddles) and Saw U (low-pitched fiddles), Kaen (reed organ), Pin (lute) and Ponglang (xylophone in Thailand’s northeastern region) to the aspiring young musicians. Afterwards, the Tam Mai Band and the Ghetto Classics joined in performing the piece called “Nok Sai Bin Kham Thung” (literally means “Sai Bird Flying over the Rice Field”) in the form of Ponglang Concerto.

          The Ghetto Classics Programme is a community programme located at Korogocho, which is one of the largest informal settlements of Nairobi. The programme was established in 2008 with the idea that learning and rehearsing classical music will help with the discipline, hard work, and team work to achieve a common objective which can be translated into life skills that can help transform their lives and their community. There are around 300 children and young people who study music under the Ghetto Classics Programme.
